Paralysis


Paralysis means loss or impairment of voluntary movement in a body part, caused by injury or disease of the nerves, brain, or spinal cord. It is a condition involving loss of muscle function in the body and may be associated with sensory loss. It can be complete or partial. According to Ayurveda it is mainly due to vitiated vata dosha or sometimes vata in association with pitta and kapha.

Causes:

It is usually a result of damage to the spinal cord or other parts of the nervous system and may be associated with Stroke, Trauma, Poliomyelitis, Cerebral palsy, Peripheral Neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, Spina bifida, Multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome. Other causes are:

  1. Sudden increase of Blood Pressure leading to stroke
  2. Infectious disorders like Meningitis etc
  3. Hereditary disorders
  4. Diabetes
  5. Head Injury
  6. Brain tumor
  7. Diseases affecting nerves

Line of treatment:

  • Cleanse the body using Panchakarma Procedures like Snehapana, Abhyanga & Sweda followed by Virechana which detoxifies the body and prepares it for further treatment.
  • Special procedures like Pizhichil, Navarakizhi etc is done to rejuvenate the nervous system and bring it slowly to normal working condition.
  • In order to improve the speech special procedures such as Gandoosha, Kavalagraha is done.
  • Special Procedures to the eyes like Netra Tarpana, Netra Dhara, Puta Paka etc are done.
  • Specific Bastis are given as per the requirement of the Patient.
  • Nervous Relaxant therapies such as Shirodhara, Shiro Basti, Shiro Pichu, etc.
  • Internal Medications, Diet and regular exercises would help to bring back the mobility.
