Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long lasting non contagious autoimmune disease characterized by raised areas of abnormal skin.

These areas are red or purple on some people with darker skin, dry, itchy and scaly.

Psoriasis varies in severity from small, localized patches to complete body coverage. Injury to the skin can trigger psoriatic skin (Koebner phenomenon)

Causes:

Genetic causes,

Environmental factors.

Signs and symptoms:

PLAQUE PSORIASIS – most common form and affect 85-90% of people with Psoriasis.

Typically appears as raised areas of inflamed skin covered with silvery -white, scalyskin.

Commonly found in elbows, knees, scalp and back.

OTHER FORM OF PSORIASIS

They include pustules, inverse, Napkin psoriasis, guttate, oral and seborrheic like forms.

PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS

Psoriatic arthritis is a form of chronicinflammatory arthritis that has a highly variable clinical presentation and frequently occurs in association with skin and nail psoriasis.

It typically involves painful inflammation of the joints and surrounding connection tissue and can occur in any joint, but most commonly affects the joint of the fingers and toes. Psoriatic arthritis can also affect the hips, knees, spine and sacroiliac joint.

IN AYURVEDA

Psoriasis is compared to Siddhma or KitibhaKushta

Ayurveda explains this disease under KshudraKushta context.

MANAGEMENT

4 to 6 weeks of admission in the hospital with the following line of treatment:

  • Educating the patient and family
  • Relaxation and meditation
  • Strict diet
  • Healthy living environment & lifestyle
  • Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment
  • Ayurveda internal medicines
  • Repeated cleansing therapies

What to expect after the treatment program:

  1. Healing of skin lesions.
  2. Reduction in plaque.
  3. Reduced chances of relapsing.
  4. Better quality of life.
  5. Gaining confidence for socialising.
  6. Other symptomatic relief.

Follow-Up:

Repetition of treatments is advised, once every six months, depending upon the condition, for the first 2 years. Later on, treatments, if needed, can be done on SOS basis.

Please note:

Response to the treatment varies from patient to patient depending upon the duration of the illness, severity, stage and other co-morbid conditions.

  Patients above the age of 70 years may or may not get the desired results owing to old age.

  Patients having Cardiac (heart) problems and / or Renal (Kidney) problems may not be considered for treatment at our Institution.
